Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt is my favorite chapter book read aloud of all time. The author is a master at creating imagery and using symbolism. With a hint of mystery and tease of haunt, this fantasy book captures the reader’s imagination and creates endless speculation and wonder. This is one of those books that is difficult to put down but also the book that you want to last forever.
#2 Mr. Popper's Penguins
Ages: All Ages
Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater is a necessary read aloud. I dare say that if this fantasy story has not been read to your children, they are at a loss. The penguins silly antics and ridiculous situations will have your children, of all ages, laughing and imagining what could or not be possible. This amusing and playful story is a true classic meant to be enjoyed together.
#3 Charlotte's Web by E.B. White
Ages- 4th grade and under
What child has not become totally captured in the classic story of Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White? This fantasy has become a classic for obvious reasons and has captured the hearts and imagination of children around the world. This tale of friendship, loyality, and sacrafice has endured the test of time and will be loved by many generations to come.
#4 The Wind in the Willows
Ages: All Ages
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame is a charming pick for a first true classic book read aloud. This fantasy story set on the River Thames is overflowing with vivid imagery and the hilarious adventures of Mr. Toad. Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride at Disneyland was based off of characters and adventures as chronicled in the Wind in the Willows.
#5 The Witch of Blackbird Pond
Ages: 4th grade and up
The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare is a historical fiction book based on the Salem Witch Trials. It is not only on my top ten best read aloud books, but it is my favorite book of all time, as well. The author transports the listener to life in the colonies and contrasts the strict religious observance as practiced by families, towns, and government to the “uncivilized” life of islanders. Elizabeth George Speare is a master of allowing the reader to find experience through her use of words.
#6 The Worst Christmas Pageant Ever
Ages: All Ages
Ok…seriously…if you haven’t read this book to your child, please read it to them before Christmas. Maybe over Thanksgiving break would be a nice time to help your child prepare for the season. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson is hands down the best Christmas book ever written. First of all, it is absolutely hilarious! The author marries humor with the true meaning of Christmas beautifully.
#7 Harry Potter and the Scorcer's Stone
Ages – 3rd grade and up
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling really does speak for itself. If you are not acquainted with the Harry Potter series please get to know it… like yesterday. There isn’t enough praise I could possibly give to this fantasy drama. Pro tip… If you have a reluctant reader, this is the book to read aloud. When your hesitant reader asks you to read the sequel, let him know that it is his turn to read. Harry Potter has turned many adverse readers into avid readers.
#8 The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
Ages – All Ages
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis is a classic story of good versus evil. Symbolism, allegory, and logic, all spring to life with the backdrop of WWII. Many questions will arise about why the children were sent to live outside of London, away from their home and parents. Forgiveness and sacrifice will be heavy on your childrens’ hearts as they are swept away in this classic novel.
#9 The Little Prince
Ages: 3rd grade and up
The Little Prince, by Antoine De Saint-Exupery is an alluring story about a young pilot that is stranded and goes on unearthly expeditions in the universe. This lonely tale that is both happy and sad will enlighten your listener to think deeply and open their mind to endless possibilities. This selection is unique and it is on this list very intentionally because it so different and thought provoking.
#10 My Father's Dragon Series
Ages: 4th grade and under
My Father’s Dragon series by Ruth Stiles Gannett is the perfect first fantasy book series to share with your child. The main character, an adventurous boy, goes on a journey where he rescues an endearing young dragon. Lessons of believing in yourself, friendship, and sacrifice are explored through these quest.
